Water level Update:

Daryl Cass, Road Commissioner, Jason Carviou, County Commissioner, and Larry Phelps, Chairman of the Board were present.

County Report:

Dam ownership is the County Board, and in 2022, the County Board delegated the Road Commission the authority to maintain and operate the Dam.

According to a court order, the dam water level is set at 682.75, and a fading spray-painted line is used as a visual mark.

The dam structure is 100 years old, with no records indicating why the dam exists.

The Dam boards were replaced in 2018, and the road commission visually inspected the structure monthly for an annual fee of $900. EGLE does a comprehensive inspection every three years for $10,000, according to part 315/307

The Road Commission expressed that if the Dam is not functioning as intended, they are the delegated authority to make the repairs.

Group discussion

SLA members expressed concern about the low lake levels at certain times of the year, with little or no rain for extended periods.  The road commission does not favor adding or removing boards to actively manage water levels. Their main concern is washing the road out. The county acknowledges there is leakage but contends there is an insufficient amount of water to impact lake levels. Rebuilding the drawdown gate, which is currently jammed open, could cost $250,000 to $500,000 in repairs. There may be grant money available to help with portions of this project, but in its entirety.

SLA members discussed with the county representatives to possibly investigate a simple, less expensive fix to stop or slow the water leak from the culverts and drawdown gate. A few options mentioned were to block the drawdown gate with rock or boulders completely. Additionally, one member has experience using hydrophobic acoustic mesh to prevent water from leaking. Options that require further consideration from the County.

Learn-to-Ski:

The learn-to-ski is still being researched.

4th of July Boat Parade

Due to the parade's success in 2022, it was agreed to continue the 4th of July Boat Parade on Saturday, July 1st @ 1:00 p.m. Members approved up to $200 for Kevin Dolsky to purchase newspaper ads promoting the boat parade. Additionally, the association approved all parade participants to receive a coupon for a kid's kid-size ice cream redeemable at the Shakey Lakes Snack Shop. Lastly, the best-decorated boat received a $50 gift card to the Shack Shop.

SLA Kids Fishing Jamboree

Continued discussions on how the SLA can remain a positive influence for members and the Lakes community.

Weed Cutter

Currently, a weed cutter is unrealistic based on the cost of purchasing one. A DNR contact was provided to research grants or permits required for cutting along with any programs the DNR may offer.
